Quilt Fabric Calculator

A king size quilt with a 12 inch drop needs 9 yd of standard 42 inch fabric for the backing (or 3¼ yd of 108 inch wide backing) and 1 yd for the binding. The top depends on your pattern. Pick your bed size below for exact figures.

How Many Yards of Fabric for a Quilt, by Bed Size

These use the calculator's defaults: a 12 inch drop on each side and the foot and a 10 inch pillow tuck (crib quilts have neither, so the crib size uses 0 for both), backing and batting 4 inches larger than the quilt on every side, 42 inch usable backing fabric and 2.5 inch binding strips. Yardage is rounded up to the nearest quarter yard.

The quilt top depends on your pattern. The calculator shows the top's area, but the yardage for a pieced top depends on the block sizes and how many fabrics you use. Work out each fabric with the fabric calculator.

How the Quilt Calculator Works

Finished size. The quilt covers the mattress plus the drop on both sides and at the foot, plus the pillow tuck at the head. Crib quilts are made to the mattress size, so the crib preset sets the drop and pillow tuck to 0. Picking a bed size resets the drop and tuck for that size.

Backing. Backing is cut larger than the quilt top so it can shift during quilting. Standard width fabric is sewn from panels, and the calculator runs the panels whichever way uses less fabric. Each seam uses the seam allowance you set.

Batting. Batting is cut to the same size as the backing.

Binding. Strips are cut across the width of the fabric and joined on the diagonal, which uses about one strip width of length per join. The total length is the quilt's perimeter plus the extra length for corners and the final join.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many yards of fabric for a king size quilt?
With a 12 inch drop and a 10 inch pillow tuck, a king quilt is 100 x 102 inches. The backing takes 9 yd of 42 inch fabric (3 panels) or 3¼ yd of 108 inch wide backing, and the binding takes 1 yd. The top depends on your pattern.
How many yards of fabric for a queen size quilt?
With a 12 inch drop and a 10 inch pillow tuck, a queen quilt is 84 x 102 inches. The backing takes 7¾ yd of 42 inch fabric (3 panels) or 3¼ yd of 108 inch wide backing, and the binding takes ¾ yd. The top depends on your pattern.
How many yards of fabric for a twin quilt?
With a 12 inch drop and a 10 inch pillow tuck, a twin quilt is 62 x 97 inches. The backing takes 6 yd of 42 inch fabric (2 panels) or 2 yd of 108 inch wide backing, and the binding takes ¾ yd. The top depends on your pattern.
How much bigger than the quilt top should the backing be?
Most quilters add 4 inches on every side, so the backing is 8 inches wider and 8 inches longer than the top. Longarm quilters often ask for more, so check with yours.
What size batting do I need?
The same size as the backing: the quilt top plus the overhang on every side. For a queen quilt with the defaults above, that is 92 x 110 inches.
How much fabric do I need for quilt binding?
Add up the four sides of the quilt, add about 10 inches, and divide by the usable fabric width to get the number of strips. A queen quilt with 2.5 inch strips needs 10 strips, which is ¾ yd.
